Why it matters

Regulation of coal mines in NSW

The EPA uses licences to regulate coal mines in NSW. Operators are required to meet legally enforceable conditions to protect the community and the environment. We progressively make changes to licences to ensure they reflect best practice.

This consultation is an important opportunity to have a look at the sector as a whole and ensure licences are operating as intended, to protect the health of the community and environment. This consultation will complement the individual statutory five yearly reviews of coal mine licences, the majority of which are due in 2024, and provide community with a streamlined opportunity to have their say.

We welcomed feedback on how we regulate and licence:

  • Monitoring conditions
  • Reporting conditions
  • Community access to information
  • Environment Protection Licence conditions.
