The policy has been updated

Thank you for your feedback on the Contaminated Land Consultant Certification Policy.

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) requested feedback on its Contaminated Land Consultant Certification Policy in March and April 2021. In May 2021 the EPA released a high-level overview of the consultation process and outcomes.

The EPA has finished its review of the policy, and the policy has been updated in response to the feedback received during consultation.

You can read the updated policy and the EPA's detailed responses to the feedback received at the EPA website.

Contaminated Land Consultant Certification Policy

The EPA first released its Contaminated Land Consultant Certification Policy in 2017.

The policy sets out the EPA's requirements for the use of certified contaminated land consultants in the preparation of reports provided to the EPA, and supports the implementation of independent consultant certification schemes.

The policy has been updated

The EPA has published its response to feedback received during consultation.

The Contaminated Land Consultant Certification Policy provides the community with confidence that contaminated land is being appropriately assessed, by a suitably qualified professional, to protect human health and the environment. The use of a suitably qualified and experienced contaminated land consultant is critical for effective site assessment and remediation and to provide confidence to community, industry and regulators reviewing the reports. The policy aims to provide clear expectations on a minimum standard for contaminated land work in NSW.

The EPA consulted with local councils, consultants, auditors, landowners, developers and staff to make sure the policy is meeting its objectives.

The objectives of the policy are to:

  • Support initiatives aiming to improve the minimum standard of contaminated land work in NSW

  • Clarify the EPA’s position with respect to the certification of contaminated land consultants

  • Support the development and implementation of nationally consistent certification schemes in Australia

  • Encourage consultants to become certified and encourage the use of certified consultants by the community and industry.
